How to Find Good Niches
The first thing you will hear when you decide to build a website, especially if you want to use that website to make a profit, is “pick a good niche.” What is a good niche? What makes one niche better than another?
First, there is no such thing as a “bad niche” as long as you are passionate about the subject. Of course we’ve been over that before. What I’m going to talk about today is how to find a niche that you are passionate about and that can turn a profit.
First, you will want to make sure that the niche you choose is not already over-crowded. While you might be passionate about making money online or politics, there are already millions of those sites all vying for attention. If you are set on covering a subject that is already crowded, do your best to come at the topic from a unique perspective.
Read some of the other sites in your niche and find out what kind of a reader-base they have. If you can’t find any sites with a solid or sizeable reader base, you might want to consider a new topic.
You will also want to pick a subject that evolves. This means that the subject stays relevant and that there is a steady amount of new information available for you to discuss on your site. A site about web site promotion might be better than say, a site about Greek history.
Your niche should be timeless—this means that people will still relate to it in a few years the way they relate to it now. This is different than making sure there is always new information. A site about, say, childcare will always be relevant. A site about Blue-Ray DVDs will not.
These are just a few tricks to make sure that your niche is a good one. Finding the right niche takes some trial and error so don’t give up! You’ll find the perfect niche eventually!

Yea, I think that this is big about blogs. I think that when people new to the internet world start a blog they expect to make money by posting news and submitting to digg. Won’t work out to well.
Great post! I think a lot of people either cannot find a niche they like, or they find a niche they think will make a profit but aren’t passionate about it. Find something you love, hopefully with low competition, and go for it!

I couldn’t agree with you more. The problem is that if you’re not passionate about the niche or if you’re not very knowledgeable you’re going to run out of unique content quickly.
Plus if you’re not knowledgeable people won’t come back because they’ll be able to read right through your content and look elsewhere.
Your niche should be about something you are really good at, so you could share your knowledge with others.
yeah I agree with you, nowdays people are blogging with the niches with which they are totally ignorant just because of making money. To make their websites profitable, a good niche with good knowledge is a must.
Passion is the Golden Egg. Maybe a hobby or skill you possess that may benefit others. These are the keys to continue a blog long term and not fizzle out.
Just write what your passionate about, knowledgeable in, and the readers and probable profit will soon follow.
I think this is an important issue to examine. If you pick a niche of the week, you may see major traffic spiking due to fad-like torrents of visitors. On the other hand, this strategy is short-lived, and your efforts may eventually give you back nothing in the future. Long-term is always the best, but ONLY for people that are confident that they’ll be able to keep it up.
I agree that there is no bad niche, but I guess the problem is how to find a niche that many people interested to…
Niche always pays
I work in the entertainment niche and it’s tough in many ways and I get frustrated with the lack of hmm. . not sure how to put this. I read lots of “winning on the web” type blogs but they all seem to focus on how to survive if you’re running another blog of that type For example, even here, the prize is an ad space - which is great if I’m running a similar blog, but how would my TV site look as an ad on this site? Out of place. (and this isn’t a poke at Perfect Blogging, love the blog, just a general frustration about niches)
Chyntia you should advertise on sites with similar niche.. you can also advertise on other niches if the price is good. You can see how many visitors you receive from them and if you are satisfied you renew. I don’t understand your “frustration”
Good article, it is very informative. I have a personal niche that I do, I just don’t have the passion for it yet. I need to sit myself down and do it regularly. Even if I do not get paid, it is still very fun to do it.
Good post. I just want to add that many pro-bloggers advocate niche like you have here, however, I think the message should be to BLOG ON WHAT YOU HAVE PASSION FOR! If you find an untapped niche and you lack passion for it, it is very likely that one will fail at blogging it.
maybe finding a good niche being my problem too, so I decide to blogging for general content, my experience, my fave, or anything I seen on internet.

I agree. Topics you’re really interested in is more important and will bring more targeted visitors. They may be smaller in traffic, but result in higher conversion.

You can make it more segmented for your readers by categorizing each post accordingly. That way, you can retain more readers.

Good for you. General content is more likely to get you more readers because you write about something that everybody knows.
