One of the main reasons that telemarketing is still a popular way to do things in the modern world is the fact that telemarketing actually works on many people. The high pressure combined with the snap decision being called for pushes many people into making purchases that they would not normally make and for that reason it is still a good way for many people to make money.

The online world is the same in principle, with the call to action representing a large part of how people make their money when they create online mini-sites responsible for the sale of a particular product.

The call of action has three major parts to it: a specific call to action, a consequence of not taking action and a deadline for the action to be taken. These three elements together will create a call to action that will stir the impulsive instinct in your consumers, causing many of them to jump to the call and make the purchase that you want them to make.

Consider the following example: Make sure that you purchase before midnight tonight. Doing so will allow you to get this amazing product at 50% of the normal price. If you don’t purchase before midnight however, then the price will go back to normal and you’ll be forced to spend a lot more money to get the product.

The specific call to action is a purchase before midnight, with the deadline for action being midnight and the consequence being a more expensive product after the deadline has passed. For anyone that is on the fence about purchasing this product, getting the chance to get it for half the normal price is something they are likely to jump at. If the rest of your sales page has done its job in interesting the client, then a call to action with all three elements should definitely create more sales or lead captures for you.

These are two vital elements to online success – niche market research and competitive analysis. Why it is essential? Well, the following paragraphs may perhaps answer that.

As a first step in online business, one needs to conjure up a solid idea about the niche market where they are going to market or try to sell their products/services. In fact, this is no new concept for businesses in any domain for they first study the market where they plan to make a customer base before setting out establishing even a franchisee/shop. This approach is important because only after finalizing the target audience, one could start an ad campaign directed at them, and only such an ad campaigns will be effective at the end of the day. Now, in order to figure out who is likely to buy a particular product or service, one may have to do a detailed study of the community in general, their shopping trends, age group and gender of potential customers etc before arriving at a conclusion.

Once done with niche research, the next step is keyword research. You must be able to anticipate the keywords usually used by customers online to search your product(s). There are automated keyword research softwares available such as Keywords Discovery that lists the most used keywords on a given niche by the netizens. On the other side of the coin, however, if you, with the aid of such tools, finds out that nobody really searches your product you wish to sell online, better don’t waste anymore money on the same.

Competitive analysis is crucial to stay in the market, especially if you have competitors already in the market. In other words, if there are competing products already exists in the market, one just can’t price his/her similar product randomly. It has to be competitive, and preferably a tad lesser than the most similar product that is currently sold in the market. Hence, it is imperative that you perform a bit of research into the current pricing trends of similar products in the market, and price your products accordingly.

In fact, there are many other factors that need to be taken into account while setting out doing online businesses. But these two – niche market research and competitive analysis – are two things that one can’t afford to let go sans serious consideration. Without a niche market, a product just can’t simply survive, so is without a competitive pricing strategy. Hence, do your homework properly, and online success won’t be too far away anymore.

The success of a business depends directly on how it manages to harness its relationship with its customers. In other words, how a business could build a win-win relation with the customers decides whether it’ll become a success down the road or not.

Customers depend on a business, its product or service, for a purpose. They pay for the service or product, and eventually, a part of the payment adds up towards the company’s profit. In a very broad scale, this is how a business-customer relation looks like. But, then there’ll be a lot of companies around to offer the same service/product to the customers, and this builds competition. In other words, a business can’t take it for granted that it’ll become profitable by default whatever comes after few years. This is where the idea of luring customers and keeping them glued to one’s product/services becomes a necessity, and the whole concept of promotion, marketing, customer care etc comes to the fore.

Customers are really wise people. They realize the business equations precisely, and know how to leverage on the advantage they has over the providers as a group. So, to have the customers on one’s side, businesses are forced to offer excellent client services, or in the case of products, better equipped products, to the customers in order to build a solid and loyal customer base. As mentioned above, since there is competition around, other companies will also be trying the same, alongside attempting to outwit its competitors in the race. Therefore it becomes a necessity of sorts for businesses to offer them more than what they expect when they first approached your company. It is the ultimate customer service in a sense for a customer only sticks with a product/service if he/she is completely satisfied with it. If a company could manage to offer better products than what the customer anticipated, quite naturally it goes towards building a strong bond between the buyer and the product, and hence the company. In other words, if a customer could relate him/her to a product, naturally he’ll come back to buy the same product again and again. Extrapolating the same scenario to include a vast customer base and that translates into a very productive and fruitful business equation, something every business out there wants to emulate or incorporate in their business and strategic models.

The bottom line is building a strong company-customer relationship that is based on trust and value. Once done that, customers will come back to the product/service naturally.

Copywriting is not an exact science; there are many ways that can be approached and many different writing techniques that can be successful if utilized appropriately in their optimal situations. However, there are mistakes that can be made in copywriting and some of these mistakes can be fatal in getting your point across. While you can’t guarantee victory with copywriting, you can guarantee defeat. Here are some potential mistakes that could be killing your sales.

Repetition: While some repetition in copywriting is good in order to brand yourself in the minds of your clients, at the same time certain types of repetition can be deadly. Repeating non-essential details a number of times in the space of the same body of copy can be deadly to your sales because a client that reads it will eventually get bored and transition away from the website. If you want to write excellent copy, make sure that you keep repetition to a minimum; only use it when you have a specific reason to do so.

Long-Windedness: Longwinded copy is not something that you want to use in an effort to sell a particular product. While longwinded copy can be fantastic for blogging and for content websites, at the same time when you are selling a product it is not what you want. You want to state the benefits of the product and the reasons the client should purchase it as briefly as possible; get to the point so that the client can make their final decision within a few minutes. The longer a buyer has to think about the purchase, the less likely their impulse to get this new product will have an effect.

Poor English: While repetition and long-windedness are terrible mistakes to make in copywriting, they pale in comparison to poor English. You are trying to act like a professional salesperson selling a product, so poor English will pretty much guarantee failure. Poor English not only forces your client to use mental power in order to figure out what you’re saying, but it also turns them off big time. If your own facility with English is not good, then get someone else to write the copy for you.

Ultimately there are many different mistakes in copywriting that can kill sales, but these are three of the big ones. Copywriting should be detailed, but to the point at the same time. Follow this general axiom and you’ll do fine.

There are many ways that you can be successful in the field of internet marketing, but one of the best things that you can have in order to help you along that path is a set of e-books to give away. E-books represent the vast majority of giveaways that happen in internet business circles and of course they also represent the majority of products, two aspects of e-books that make them a must have for any internet business that wants to be ultimately successful.

In terms of giveaways, the reason that the most successful internet businesses use e-books for their giveaways is because e-books are the best product to use in that role. E-books are cheap to purchase (free in most cases) and can usually be purchased with the rights to resale or to give the book away. In addition to that, e-books usually carry good information that can be used to supplement what you have in your main product and for that reason they make the most logical bonus product to give away. Lastly, the more e-books you give away, the better you look as a salesman and that is perhaps the strongest reason as to why e-books are used by all successful internet businesses.

In terms of the main product, the whole idea behind internet business is to create it with a minimum of cost and derive from it a maximum of profit. Of course, the best way to do this is to create a product that is both original yet at the same time quite easy for you to make. An e-book is a natural choice in this case because writing one is relatively easy to do (and it is relative easy to contract out for a few hundred dollars if you don’t want to write it yourself) and once you have written it you rarely have to add anything to it because the information in the book promises to be good for most of the life of your internet business.

If your business has a blog, you might not think that you need a newsletter. Guess what—even with a blog, your business will benefit by having a regular newsletter circulate to your clients. Here are four reasons why you should offer a newsletter:

1. Not every client will take the time to visit your blog. People are busy, they often forget about business blogs. If you send out a newsletter (hard copy or email), your clients are still offered updates on the goings on of your business and they are free to read it when they have time!

2. Special deals. A newsletter is a great way to offer special deals to your clients. These deals will give your clients added incentive to not only subscribe to the newsletter but to keep using your services. Special deals can be anything from coupons to notices of upcoming sales that you do not plan on announcing publicly.

3. Newsletters are a time saver. Instead of sending an e-mail to your client from every department that he or she does business with regularly, have your department heads come up with “what we have done” and “what we have plans to do” statements and include them in the newsletter. This way, everybody knows what is going on in your business and you won’t accidentally flood your clients with email every time you think of a new initiative.

4. Newsletters are a great source of additional revenue. Just like a blog, newsletters often have space for advertising. Use your newsletter to offer advertising to the businesses in your network. Even if you offer them a “friend of business” discount, you have still created an additional revenue stream for your business!

Newsletters are good for business—not everybody will take the time to read a blog, but most people will take the time to read a newsletter!

1. Cut down on spending! The best way to increase your income is to cut your spending. This will allow you to keep more of the money that you make.

2. Do you have any items that you can part with? You would be amazed with how much money you can make by selling things on eBay.

3. Are you arty or crafty? Websites like etsy.com are a great place to sell your arts and crafts projects.

4. Finding a part time job or signing on with a temp agency is a good way to create some extra income to get you through the lean times.

5. Expand your business. One of the best ways to bring in more clients and customers is to expand into another area. For example, if you have a graphic design business, you might consider devoting a small portion of your business area to printing services—color copies, faxing, etc.

6. Can you turn any part of your business into a “members only” service? Membership dues are a great way to bring in some more income.

7. Can you create a training program or any written materials from what you do? Many people will gladly sign up to take a class or buy a book that will teach them the basics of how to do your services themselves. This will also free you up to take on the more complicated projects that you might have had to pass on in order to keep doing the basic stuff.

8. Sell advertising space—sell ads on your website. If you don’t have a website, start one! Create a short newsletter and sell advertising space within its pages. Advertising will provide you with considerable extra income—especially if your site or newsletter is popular.

When it comes to building a blog or any site, most people start with the domain name and go from there. The better way to approach the choosing of your domain name is to decide what your website should be about and then work on a domain name that matches the subject matter.

Of course, more often than not, the perfect domain name will already be taken!

Here are a few tips to help you choose that perfect domain name for your website without having to compromise (much):

1. Consider buying a .net or a .org domain name. Often .net and .org are cheaper than .com but just as respectable.

2. Spell things correctly whenever you can. While a site named MiOpinyonz might be okay for a teenager’s website, it is not okay for a person trying to set up a serious political site. In fact, the use of the letter “z” in place of “s” is generally seen as unprofessional unless you are putting together a site for a much younger audience.

3. Get out that Thesaurus and find some synonyms. “GoodCats” might be taken but “GreatFelines” still works for the cause and means the same thing (though, admittedly it sounds a little more porny than “goodcats”).

4. Keep your audience in mind. Going with the cat theme from tip 3, a site about cats might not fare well when named “Pretty Kitties” or “the Cat House.” Beware of the unintentional innuendo.

5. Keep it short whenever possible. While “thisismyperfectdomainname.com” is certainly easy to remember, “perfectname.com” is easier to type.

6. (and most important) Never ever forget what your website is about! Would you name a site about politics “windowshades.org”? No. Would you name a site about crafts “househunting.com”? No. You want to make sure your domain name reflects what your site is about!

Good luck!

When you think of “great” bloggers, who do you think of? Dooce? Kottke? John Chow? What makes these bloggers “great”? And, more importantly, what is your Blogging Image and how can you improve it?

A lot goes into the reputation of a Blogger. The amount of time they spend on the content of their blog, what that content is, how active they are within their niche in the blogging community, how many links they have—it all figures into a Blogger’s reputation. There are plenty of ways to ensure that you earn a stellar blogging image and there are plenty of ways that you can improve the blogging image you already have.

1. Don’t be a link… [insert unsavoury word here]. If you run around the blogosphere begging for links or leaving comments without actually contributing to the conversation, stop it right now. It doesn’t take long to get labelled a spammer and that label is a hard one to get rid of.

2. If you sell ads on your site, make sure there is actual content to back them up. Nothing damages your blogging image faster than creating a “blog” which is really just an “affiliate link factory.” Not only does it hurt your blog image, you won’t see a high return on your affiliate links because people won’t have a reason to click on them or to make a purchase.

3. When you leave a comment on another site, make sure the comment you leave is relevant to the post. Nothing is more irritating than having someone leave a comment that says “Nice post!” or “Nice blog!” This is only acceptable after you have formed a reputation on that blog as being a regular commenter.

The best way to improve your blogging image is to think of the bloggers you admire and do your best to emulate them. This doesn’t mean that you should copy them or their content, but try to model your behaviour in the blogosphere after theirs.

An important part of creating any business or website (or blog, which is what I am specifically going to be talking about) is establishing a brand behind it.

What is a brand? It is a combination of things which resemble your site/business/blog. This brand should be unique so that people can recognize your blog easily. In this day, with literally millions of blogs out there, it is very important to stand out so that you don’t get “lost in the crowds.” Along with helping your blog stand out, creating a good brand will help visitors remember your site and it will be more likely for them to return.

There are several factors which play into creating a successful brand. From picking a catchy name, to making slogans and logos, to choosing color themes, it really can be overwhelming at times. That is why I have decided to dedicate a few posts (which should be appearing over the next few days) to help you start and promote your brand, one step at a time.

For those non-bloggers reading this: Although I will be writing specifically towards bloggers this information may still be useful to you if you have a business or a website; you may just have to apply and twist things a little bit to fit your situation, so you may still want to stay tuned.

Still doubting the power of brands? Just look at these pictures and if you can tell what any/most of them are then that is thanks to successful branding.

What do you think?
