How to Find Your Blog Competitors

March 24, 2008

With millions of blogs in existence and millions more being created every day, it would be naïve to assume that you were the only blog in your niche.  If you want readers to think of you as an authority on your subject matter and to choose your blog over those of your competitors, you need to make sure that your blog is the best in your niche.  So how do you do this?  You find out who your major competitors are and make sure that your blog is better than theirs.  So how do you find your blog competitors?

Technorati

As soon as you start your blog you will want to make sure that you have claimed your blog on Technorati.  Technorati is the best measure of where your blog ranks in the blogosphere.  It will keep track of how many incoming links you have, how many people have favorited your blog and how it is ranked among other blogs who have chosen the same “tags.”

The tags you choose in Technorati should reflect your niche and the easiest way to find your blog competitors is to see which blogs have claimed the same tags that you claimed on your blog.

Google

Obviously you can do a Google search for “niche blogs” replacing the word “niche” with whatever niche you have for your blog.  This will be a good way to see how the Google search ranks compare with the Technorati rankings and make sure that your blog is at the top of both.

Links

Another way to find your blog competitors is to search for links to other sites in your niche.  You will want to look for reviews.  Often, when one site reviews another, they will compare the subject of the review to other sites in the same niche.  They will tell the readers whether the subject of the review is better or worse than its competition and why.  This will tell you two things: who your competitors are and how you can be better than them.

These are just three ways to find your blog competitors and make sure that your blog is better ranked than the blogs that you are competing against.  Something to keep in mind: blogging is not a straight-up competition.  There is no real “winner,” at least—not for any length of time.  If you want your blog to be the best in your niche, you will want to reference your blog competitors from time to time.

I had not thought of approaching this solution in quite this manner:
“They will tell the readers whether the subject of the review is better or worse than its competition and why.” Makes sense.

I don’t see other blogs as competition. I just do my own thing.

Another good way is using one of the free pieces of software that’s out to help find blogs for commenting…..not to mention Entrecard now.

Unless you run a personal blog, this is a dangerous way to do business.

It’s definitely wise to know what other blogs are competing for your readers. By checking out other blogs with similar content, you can find out what you are lacking and improve on it.

See what works, and what doesn`t and then apply this knowledge to your own practices.

I don’t try to “be competitive” with other blogs either. The only person you should be competing with is yourself. I give blogging all that I’ve got and am satisfied.

Technorati can definitely work well for finding similar blogs.
